Los científicos del cine
Los científicos del cine
The scientists of cinema
Abstract:
It is an undisputed fact that scientific discovery has been notably present in cinema since its early origins, either as a precursor of the Cinématographe’s invention in the twilight of the nineteenth century or even as a tool intended for the technical improvement of the audiovisual aids and the progressive quality of image and sound, as well as a driving force in the opening-up to modern digitalization nowadays. Our aim in this article is to have a short tour around the most prominent scientists that have led the history of film in a wide sense, from the early inventors and the pioneers of special effects and trick photography to the on-screen sociologically stereotypes that audiovisual means have provided for decades. Finally, we also discuss the advertising or warning role that motion pictures have carried out to mainly reflect the prosperities and adversities that techno-scientific progress may entail.

El caso de Not Another Teen Movie
El caso de Not Another Teen Movie
Film, american and japanese music video: the art direction as common thread. The case of Not Another Teen Movie
Francisco Vegas Molina
Not another teen movie, Joel Gallen, 2001).
Abstract:
The relationship between film and video is a matter studied by adherents of both one and the other part of the equation. These relationships tend to cover the technical sense of both subjects while a thrives on the other (or another one); the narrative sense that sometimes enters the game also the theater itself; cultural sense of why these interferences that often occur in the technical field are produced; and, of course, aesthetic sense, also closely linked to the latter, among others.
However, it is taken for granted in advance the relationship between film and video in all these respects to take as a clip case, for promotional purposes, has been extracted from a film confirmed conscience. This is the case of the video Tainted Love (2002), starring Marilyn Manson and directed by Phillip G. Atwell, and film Not Another Teen Movie (Not Another Teen Movie, Joel Gallen, 2001) which is extracts the first. Thus, the analysis will focus on how all these «bridges» (technical, cultural, visual, narrative) between the two end up condensing the service image and symbolism, to go to repeat with a purely artistic motif for Promotional third foreign actor visual kei group The Gazette, with the title track to his video Inside Beast (Toshihiko Imai, 2013).

A semiotics of selfie in the visual digital culture
Manuel A. Broullón-Lozano
Abstract:
First of all, the selfie phenomena consists on turning inside the photoghraphic syntax, in order to concentrate into the same instance the photographer and the object of the photography. In addition to this, it has to deal with the visual structure of the society at the begining of the XXIst century. On that way, this essay may analyze some digital pictures which has been taken and published on the Internet during the year 2014 which have been composed according to this self conscient enunciation. At least we may be able to build a semiotic cultural typology about the structure of watching and being watched through the web 2.0.

Mobile phone photojournalism: the end or the reinvention of press photojournalist?
Eva Lavin
Abstract:
The Internet, social networks and technological developments have caused a change in the news paradigm, affecting an ever-increasing proportion of the photojournalism process. The increase in the resolution of camera phone photographs has enabled an amateur to take publishable photos, then rapidly spread it among million of users through internet-based social networks. Many news agencies and media outlets now rely on these freely-available amateur photographs as a reliable source of up-to-the-minute photographic information. Also, some news companies have even dismissed their photographers entirely and replace them by smartphones. Despite this, some photographers and researchers are optimistic about the new tools and believe they may usher in a new golden age in photojournalism. In this article, we investigate the current state and future of photojournalism, and ponder if this marks the end or simply a reinvention of the role of press photographers.

When the horizont is the present. The suspended time in Chien-Chi Chang’s work

Abstract:
The concepts of otherness and sameness, present in philosophy since its origin, have been a subject of controversy since the mid-twentieth century. Issues such as the representation of the Other, the autorreferenciality and the historicity have ruled postcolonial studies.
But this dichotomy sameness-otherness is put in question today by fluid identities caused by migration. Through the analysis of «I do, I do, I do», a photography serie taken by Chien-Chi Chang, a member of Magnum Agency, the paper aims to hybridize the concepts of otherness and sameness through a new conceptualization of temporality.

An approach to The Master (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2012) from the study of their film reviews
Abstract:
The work herein presented is an approach to the film The Master. This Paul Thomas Anderson movie released for the first time in 2012, and both, its premiere as its production, were joined by a rumor: the plot of the film was about a religious movement, Scientology. This rumor has committed its critical reception and its final message. In this paper, we approach to this media reception to collect the ideas that have emerged around the movie. And, from these ideas, we will propose a new view about this Paul Thomas Anderson work.

The eight lives of Ulysses Grant: the myth and the story film
Abstract:
Represented much or more than the rest of the American Presidents of all times, the figure of President Ulysses S. Grant has not counted so far with a large predicament in film studies, despite it have been erected, with identical continuity, a singular icon, both the main virtues and the particular charism of the American people. Many have been the films and television series that have portrayed the irregular path of this leader, so renowned for its capabilities for military strategy as reviled by cases of corruption that splashed the last years of his mandate. Through the narrative, aesthetic analysis and Dialogic of their essential film appearances, this study combines and put in value, for the first time, all perspectives on a historical character whose flaws and excellencies wished to combine the seventh art, setting it up, with the passing of decades, as a unique and legend-edged symbol.

JLG/JLG JLG/JLG self-portrait in December: Godard’s mourning through the winter
Marta M Mata
Abstract:
This article is an attempt to analyse Godard’s inscription in JLG/JLG Autoportrait de décembre (1994), to demonstrate how the film-maker tries to kill himself as biographical figure through his self-portrait and because of his own concept of author’s responsibility. He will not achieve his objective, although expresses that it is something he still owes his audience. All this he will do through a fragmented discourse structured as a reflection of his own thought in process, obliging his spectator to participate in the production of meaning and resorting to references of all sort (cinematographic, philosophic and literary) that connect with himself as cultural being
